Woman Shares Her Story on Surviving a Heart Attack

Posted: Updated:

Today is Go Red Day for Women, where we raise awareness on learning on how to prevent heart disease and knowing the signs of a heart attack.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in woman. And, for one Minot woman, it's been almost a year since she got a scare that almost took her life.

Marlys Belgarde suffered a massive heart attack last year.

"It was really a lot of pain," says Belgarde.

She started having chest pains that traveled all the way around her back.

"Just pain. The worst pain I ever felt," says Belgarde.

After knowing something was wrong, she asked her daughter to call 911.

"I was scared. I didn't want to die," says Belgarde.

Now, she does have family history of heart problems as a well as her own pre-existing conditions.

"The doctor said it was from smoking. And, I only started smoking again in 2009. I had quit for 10 years and as I smoked more I noticed I got less active and I noticed my health was going," says Belgarde.

While many of us know smoking is not good for our body, the addiction can be hard to kick.

Belgarde says this heart attack served as a wake up call. Just yesterday, she stopped over at First District Health in Minot to pick up nicotine patches to help her kick that habit.
