National Guard's State Surgeon Retires

Posted: Updated:

After more than 30 years of service, the North Dakota National Guard's state surgeon is retiring. Today, members of the Guard along with family and friends gathered to celebrate his career.

Col. Craig Lambrecht joined the Guard in 1983 and has served in a number of roles including physician, flight surgeon, deputy commander and commander. He served twice in Iraq and helped expand and improve care for pediatric burn victims across Iraq. And he says the whole experience has been rewarding.

"It's enormously humbling and sort of difficult because after 30 years the soldiers the community's support the uniform, the deployments, war and then the happy things that you just can't explain it's just been a career that I am so grateful for, so grateful for," says Lambrecht.

Lambrecht is the president of Sanford Health's West Region in Bismarck, and says he is planning on continuing that and focusing on his family now that he's retired.
