The Olympic spirit is all about team spirit. And there's definitely a lot of that at the District Four Special Olympics basketball tournament.
"It's fun to see all these athletes out here where nobody cares how they play," says Special Olympics Director Ken Stockert. "They're just here to play and do their best."
Thirteen teams from across the state competed, and one even traveled from Glendive, Montana.
"I'm just so appreciative that North Dakota allows Montana's team to come in," says Glendive Coach, Larry Veverka. "I believe that some of our athletes that have been held back to some extent are gaining a lot of confidence today. They're being able to dribble the ball, they're being able to shoot the ball. So, it's been a real ego booster for them and I'm very happy that we got to come."
Athletes say the games are fun, but the company is better.
"I guess I'm most excited, or what I'm looking forward for today is just being able to see other players from other teams and just get to hang out with the people I got to meet from the previous years that I've been in Special Olympics," says Bismarck Athlete, Rose Hegel.
And it's not hard to tell if the athletes are having a good time.
"You see somebody that might not make a shot, ever, to sometimes they make a shot in a game," says Stockert. "It's something that we take for granted, but these athletes don't."
The teams are gearing up for the state basketball tournament in Minot on March 7th and 8th.
