District 35 Seat Interests Three Candidates

Posted: Updated:

Democrat and Republican state district conventions are coming up this month and both parties will decide who they will endorse to run in the state legislature. And there's one race in Bismarck that's already heating up.

The last legislative session has been over for almost a year, but some people weren't happy with how it went and have decided to run for office to bring about some change.

"I think that there is a real lack of respect, moderation and common sense and stuff that's important to everybody in a district and not just one persons personal agenda," says candidate Erin Oban.

During the last session seven abortion bills were introduced and discussed. In the end five passed both chambers and were signed by the governor. A big supporter of those bills was Senator Margaret Sitte of district 35.

"You know I think a lot of that is really personal. Something I don't feel should be dominating an entire session. Where there's so many issues and opportunities for the state of North Dakota right now," says Oban.

And she's not the only one with those feelings. In fact another democrat, Tracy Potter is also running for the seat against Senator Sitte.

"She works hard as a candidate. She knocks on doors too. She'll have some money, a lot of out of state money I suspect because of her positions. It will be a hard fought race, but again, I think I fit the center of our district better than Mrs. Sitte does," says Potter.

Potter served in the Senate from 2007 until 2010 and he says it's that experience that he hopes will give him an edge in the election.

"I think it's the perfect way to judge two candidates. Now, we each have records. It's not just the promises of what we believe in or things like that. It's what do you actually do while you're here," he says.

As for Oban, she says she will bring a new perspective to the seat and hopes to be given the opportunity to bring more focus on education, property taxes and issues facing western North Dakota.

The democratic party will decide which candidate to endorse later this month at the district convention.

We reached out to Senator Sitte, but she refused to comment.
