FDA Looks Into Pain Med Safety

Posted: Updated:

Doctors say, for more than a decade, Naproxen was believed to be the better medicine to use because it wasn't supposed to be as hard on the heart as other pain killers, such as Advil or Motrin. But that may not be the case anymore.

"Basically what they are trying to say is Naproxen is just as good as other medications. It's not anything better, or not much safer compared to other medications. So, they're not going to change the guidelines," says Dr. Surya Artham, Sanford.

It's easy for us to grab the pill bottle when we're not feeling up to par, but just because it's easy doesn't mean the drugs should be overused by patients, especially those who have heart conditions already.

"You can have a heart attack, it increases your risk of stroke, it increases your risk of kidney failure," says Artham. "That's why we recommend the lowest dose possible for a short duration."

We're a country that wants it all and we want it now, especially when it comes to our health, but in this case, more isn't always better.
