Extension Agency Shares Where Food Comes From

Kids may often wonder where their food comes from. To help them learn is the Living Ag Classroom. Here to tell us more about that is, Jackie Buckley from the Morton County Extension Agency.

From Farm to Fork

Welcome to the Living Ag Classroom, a learning experience about where your food and other products that you use in daily living come from.

Here are the exhibits that make up our classroom:

1. Livestock Display: (presented by the Mandan FFA Chapter) This display features a question and answer session with true and false facts about cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens, turkeys and horses. Through this fun activity, students will find out how much food a cow eats and where chocolate milk comes from. They'll learn how many brothers and sisters each type of livestock usually has, and what we call the fathers, mothers and children of each species.

2. ND Corn Council Students will learn about the different kinds of corn that are grown: field, sweet and popcorn. As well, they will discuss many different uses and facts about field corn, which include the four "F's" promoted by our industry—food, fuel, feed and fiber. A fun spinning wheel will provide a fun yet informative tool for the students to become more familiar with the corn industry.

3. N.D. Oilseed Council: This booth features six different oilseed categories grown in North Dakota: sunflower (confection and oil), safflower, canola, crambe and flax. North Dakota is the #1 producer of sunflower, canola and flax in the U.S. Children will be able to touch, smell and identify the different oilseeds. Oil is obtained from crushing the seed and is then used as a vegetable oil for cooking and frying foods like potato chips. They'll see various by-products that make up the products we buy and use every day.

4. N.D. Wheat Commission: Students will learn about the two main classes of wheat grown in this state this includes hard red spring wheat and durum. Children will discover that a bushel of wheat makes a tremendous amount of food, as well as a wide variety of food products, ranging from bread and pasta, to pizza crusts and tortillas. Wheat will be milled into flour. Through a hands on activity, they'll learn that the farmer's share is minimal in the price of a loaf of bread. They'll see that North Dakota farmers truly do help feed the world through the vast exports; and apply their knowledge by answering a variety of questions.

5. Northarvest Bean Growers Association: Dry bean farmers produce nine classes of beans in North Dakota and Minnesota. They are optimistic business people who invest and manage money carefully, evaluate facts, uncontrollable weather and markets as they successfully grow and sell high quality dry beans to customers in the United States and around the world. Students will play Bean Crazy They will pretend to be dry bean farmers and learn about dry bean production while they make decisions and encounter random weather and market conditions during the four seasons of Planting, Growing, Harvest and Marketing. They will examine actual dry beans and bean food.

6. "When I Grow Up … Careers in Agriculture" (presented by the NDSU Extension Service – Burleigh, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, Grant, McLean and Kidder Counties) This program is designed to give students an opportunity to learn about five different careers that relate to the theme "from farm to fork." Students will be asked to identify the career through ahands-on matching activity involving tools and clothing attire for each profession. As a result of their activity, students will gain a better understanding of these careers and their importance to the agriculture industry.

7. Midwest Dairy Association of North Dakota: A narrated video of the daily activities on a North Dakota Dairy Farm will be viewed by the students to help them learn about the care and dedication dairy farmers give to their dairy cows and the steps taken to produce wholesome milk. They will hear about how milk is transported from the farm, tested, packaged and delivered to their local store, school or restaurant. Students will be reminded of the importance of getting 3 to 4 servings of dairy in their die every day.

8. North Dakota Department of Agriculture: Agriculture is big business in North Dakota. In fact, it's so big, our state's farmers and ranchers lead the nation when it comes to more than a dozen important crops, like wheat, durum, flax, canola, sunflowers, pulse crops, and more! The Showcase North Dakota Agriculture booth is a hands-on look at what's growing in North Dakota, and what those products can be turned into for our grocery store shelves.

9. N.D. Farmers Union: NDFU's booth theme, "From Producers 2 U," gives an interactive overview of farmers and ranchers raising crops and animals through each season of the year. Students will get a chance to visualize the food production process, starting with seed and ending with the final product.

10. N.D. Honey Promotion: Students will see a live beehive and learn about the importance of pollination and the role of the honeybee in the production of food. They'll see some of the different products made from the beehive and produced by honeybees.

11. N.D. Beef Commission: Students will learn a variety of important information about beef ranging from nutrition to by-products. They will have an opportunity to identify where various cuts of beef come from on a beef carcass and answer a number of questions on nutrition. They will also see a display showing how many quarter pound hamburgers we get from a 1,000 pound steer. A few of the items we get from cattle besides beef will also round out the trip through beef country as students are allowed the opportunity to learn how many different pieces of popular sporting goods, such as basketballs and footballs, can be obtained from just one cow hide.

12. ND Farm Bureau: Pork – "We use Everything but the Oink" – youth will learn: Pigs have many different uses including as a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Once all the edible meat is taken off of the carcass, there are a lot of uses for the by-products. It has been researched that there are more than 184 products that come from hogs, including some very important medical uses. The students will be able to test their newly learned knowledge on a "Squeal of Fortune" game.

13. Morton County Soil Conservation District: Students will learn about the different types of shrubs, conifers, and other trees. Students will learn how trees improve soil and water quality, and how important they are to agriculture. Students will learn the difference between a field windbreaks, farm shelter belts, living snow fences, and a riparian tree plantings. Students will also learn how different soils are suited to different trees.

14. N.D. Soybean Council: Soybeans (the Miracle Bean) are a legume crop, meaning that they grow as edible seeds in a pod. Because they can be used to make so many different things, soybeans are becoming an important crop in North Dakota. Students will learn how to identify soybeans, see how they are grown, and will see a few of the many products made from soybeans.
