Thrift Store Employee Recognized for Her Honesty

Posted: Updated:

It's a question of integrity. What would you do if you found a large sum of money?

Would you look for the owner or keep it for yourself? It doesn't cost anything to do the right thing.

"I was sorting in a cart like this, and I came across girls tights. I thought it was tights. It said three in a pack. I opened the package. It was already opened. Took it out and it didn't look like tights," says Anna Nies, The Arc.

It wasn't tights. Anna found a bank envelope with $460 inside.

"I looked at the girl I was working with and said, 'I'll be back,' and ran up to the office to Kathy. I didn't stop to think or anything," says Nies.

Anna didn't count the money. In fact, she didn't know how much cash she found until a few days later. But the money wouldn't stay lost forever. There was also a bank receipt inside the envelope.

"I gave it to Cally. And Cally called the bank, because it said what bank it was. And they looked up the account number and found out who it belonged to, and we were able to get a hold of them," says thrift store manager Kathy Puklick.

The Arc wanted to reward Anna for her honesty. But it was the generosity of a woman she's never met that may surprise you. The owner of the money gave Anna a $500 reward. Forty more than was in the envelope.

"It melts your heart, especially around Valentine's Day. It makes you realize that there are good people on both ends of the spectrum. Anna first did the right thing to turn it in, but this woman had such a generous heart of giving to give that money to someone who's really going to put that money to use and help Anna in her new marriage as a newlywed. So, it's just a feel-good story all-around."

The owner of the money asked to remain anonymous. She said she was happy to reward Anna for her honesty. But Anna says she was just doing the right thing. And she never expected anything in return.

Anna says she's not sure how she'll spend the money. But she says she may use some of it to buy a Valentine's Day present for her husband.
