Student Passes Out Homemade Valentines

Posted: Updated:

It's Valentine's Day and that means kids in classrooms across the country passed out valentines to their classmates. Many of those cards were bought at the store and signed by the student but one local girl says that's not for her, she makes hers extra special.

Julia Gordon has been creating art for as long as she can remember, a skill she picked up from her mom.

"Once I saw one of her drawings, and it looked fun so I tried it. I guess I just liked it," says Julia.

In fact she liked drawing so much that when she started pre-school her mom thought it would be fun to have her make her own valentines, instead of picking them out at the store.

"It's really great. It's wonderful to have a child that likes art and likes to sit down and create something with tools and pastels and all the different materials," says Julia's mom Melissa Gordon.

Mom used to help her when she was little, but now that's she's a bit older she doesn't need as much help and uses Pinterest as a guide.

"I kind of follow the picture and just kind of make up my own way to do it," says Gordon.

And she says her classmates have always liked the extra effort she puts into making them.

"They're just really pleased that they're not like the 3d ones and just that they're homemade and stuff like that," says Julia.

But Julia doesn't just make cards for this holiday. Her mom says she has quite the collection of cards Julia has given to her over the years.

"This one was our Thanksgiving card this year with her own hand drawn turkey. She said she didn't even have to trace her hand for this one," says Gordon. "I love his little waddle. And then this is a happy half birthday mom. We celebrated my half birthday last year and here's a picture of our dog on the inside of it."

But whether it's a birthday, Valentine's day or just for fun, Julia plans to keep at it.

"I like sometimes just expressing my feelings through drawing," she says.

This year there are nine kids in her class and she made a flamingo for each of them and for her teacher.
