Do It Yourself: Finish Furniture

Posted: Updated:
Usually you are going to finish furniture because it's something attractive. It's something worth putting some work into because you don't like the finish that's on it now. Are you going to sand everything off and start over? Sanding or furniture stripper. Or there are other things like doing it halfway without removing the entire finish.

You might see brands you recognize like "Zip Strip" but sometimes the brands you don't recognize might actually be the better way to go. When you have a national brand they will pay a little more attention to being safe. In this case, I use the lesser known brand. I like it better. When you really need to get a lot of finish off, you see adhesive remover products. It's also a great paint stripper. Some people don't like the smell of certain strippers. Then there is Citristrip. It doesn't smell, but the bad thing about is products like these are much slower.

And a product like Formby's will take a off a little more of the surface. And then you can re-apply a finisher or various types of oil treatments.

You can use steel wool and there are various grades of steel wool. And there are various types of synthetic steel wool. You need chemical resistant rubber gloves on and be sure they say chemical grade. Normal plastic gloves won't work properly.

One of the problems with old wooden chairs is the wood fibers start to loosen up and shrink. There are certain types of oil to use. There is Tung oil and Danish oil and that oil will replenish the wood. So, when we get down to where we get this finish removed on this chair we will treat it with an oil and not put a hard finish over it.

Be careful when you buy Tung oil. There is regular Tung oil and Tung oil finish. The finish is actually a varnish. It will seal the wood. Always buy 100% Tung oil.
