Investigation Shows Self-Defense

Posted: Updated:

An investigation, conducted by several organizations, determined that the court is not going to charge the person responsible for killing Joel Sherman with homicide because it was self defense.

Throughout Nov. 26 Sherman made many threats that he was going to kill an individual, whose name is not being released. The person being threatened was informed about his statements.

The following day, Sherman arrived at the person's home, on the Turtle Mountain Reservation, with a loaded gun. The two men argued inside and outside of the residence before Sherman fired several rounds at the individual. The other person then returned fire and killed Sherman.

After statements made by witnesses on scene and forensic evidence, officials say that are not pressing charges.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
