Group Opposes Proposed Conservation Amendment

Posted: Updated:

A group of North Dakotans want to dedicate a portion of the state's oil and gas taxes to create a fund dedicated to conserving natural areas in the state.

But today another group, North Dakotans for Common Sense Conservation, came out in opposition.

The NDCSC consists of over 20 agriculture, business and government associations and they say the amendment would cost the state between $300 - $400 million each biennium.

"We all support conservation in North Dakota. However, we disagree with the sponsors of the amendment on the funding level, the lack of flexibility and the fact that out of state interests are driving this proposed constitutional mandate," says Kelvin Hullet, Bismarck- Mandan Chamber of Commerce.

Supporters hope to get enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.
