Farming is any other business, theft affects the bottom line. And that's why producers need to carefully monitor who enters their property.
Many farmers are using surveillance systems to monitor their property.
"They're looking at their grain barrels, their fuel barrels. The number one area that everyone is worried about is theft of the fuel. And then, the next one is just shop tools and equipment that gets stolen off the property," says John McGuire, Video Surveillance Solutions.
Video Surveillance Solutions started about ten years ago. They offer both analog and HD quality systems. Footage is recorded on a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and can be accessed through a smart phone, computer or tablet. A time and date stamp and a watermark are included in the video, which helps make it admissible in court.
"This takes and proves that it was real video that nobody can dispute," says McGuire.
Cameras can also be used in the field.
"So, you're actually taking and seeing inside the siv. Am I running at the right speed? At the discharge, am I going too fast and blowing grain out the back end? The hopper, a lot of them have sensors, but within 20 feet you could be over or not. This way, I can truly see that," says McGuire.
A four-camera analog system with a DVR system starts at $800. HD systems start at around $1,500.
McGuire says surveillance systems can also help prevent the spread of disease. A lot of diseases are transferred from farm to farm. And by monitoring who's on their property, they know who has come in contact with their animals.
