Police Take Precautions To Help Stop Accidents

Posted: Updated:

Traffic accidents in the city of Williston increased in December 2013. The question is, did the numbers go up again in January?

Last month, Williston had seen an influx of traffic accidents compared to December 2012. January was a different story.

"In January of 2013, we had 155 crashes within the area. This year we had 150 in January," says Sgt. David Peterson, detective for Williston Police Department.

Peterson says they do a monthly analysis on the amount of crashes there are and compare them to the same month the year before.

"The decrease that we are seeing is mostly made up of our hit and run crashes," he says. "Hit and run crashes were down this year too."

The police department really tried to pay attention to hit run accidents and it showed in the overall numbers.

"We're really trying hard to take a more proactive approach to patrol and getting into these areas that we're seeing some of these hit and run crashes in. Those are our residential areas, and we are trying to maneuver some of our patrol to those areas," says Peterson.

The maneuvering might be happening already since they issued 32 more citations last month than in 2013.

"Our patrol is going to be out there in our school zones, and in our more frequent areas where we're having more crashes occur," says Peterson. "And just writing more tickets and citations for the failure to obey traffic control devices."

Peterson says some of the biggest issues are with people not obeying right a ways and red lights.

He also says that people speeding is another reason for accidents in January.
