Phone Scam Threatens Credit and Debit Card Users

Posted: Updated:

It's the latest phone scam. And it's hitting cell phone users across the state. The automated calls claim to be from Gate City Bank. But, they're part of a phishing scam that can result in identity theft.

It was after 10 at night when Judy Gries got a call from an unavailable number.

"It said it was Gate City Bank calling, asking about my debit card with them and that it had been locked. And they needed me to call this number to unlock that debit card," says Gries.

She says she new it was a phone scam, because the call came so late on a Sunday night. She doesn't have an account with Gate City, but her daughter does. So, she told her to call the bank to make sure her identity wasn't stolen.

"I was concerned they may have accessed into the bank information, people's numbers. So, I just wanted it checked," she says.

The automated phone calls are randomly generated. And it's not just Gate City customers receiving the calls.

Rick Clayburgh, North Dakota Bankers Association
"The majority of the calls that are coming in to the Attorney General's office and what we're hearing about was using the name Gate City," says Rick Clayburgh, North Dakota Bankers Association. "But, they've also used CitiBank, Wells Fargo and we're understanding today, also using Microsoft. The name Microsoft is coming up in these names, as well."

Clayburgh says banks don't make automated calls. And they never need to ask for personal information. So, if you get one of these calls, hang up and don't call back.

"They don't know your name. They don't know what your accounts end in. They don't have any information on you. And so, when you receive these types of calls that are saying, 'If you don't do something within the next few hours, something bad is going to happen,' it's an automated phishing call that is being run by bad people trying to get access to your credit," says Clayburgh.

If you've been a victim of this phone scam and gave out information, contact your bank. It's the best way to prevent identity theft.

Clayburgh says banks already have your information. If the caller doesn't know your name and can't provide account information, it's probably a scam.
