Inside Surgery: Total Knee Replacement

Living with damaged joints can be extremely uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable.

Sanford Health Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. David O'Regan says during a total knee replacement, 
doctors remove the damaged cartilage and replace it with new joint surfaces. The ends of the thigh and shin bones and usually the kneecap are covered with artificial surfaces that are lined with metal and plastic. New joint components are then secured to the bones with cement, creating the new joint. 

"I've slowed my level down quite a bit-gained some weight, and I just can't wait to shed those pounds again and to get more active," says total knee replacement patient, Mark Hoff. "If I got out there and increased my activity level much right now, I'd pay at the end of the day."

Tomorrow we will follow up with Mark after his surgery to see his progress, and speak with the physical therapist who's helping Mark through the rehab process.
