Gas Prices On The Rise

Posted: Updated:

This is normally the time of year where gas prices are towards their lowest point. But a rise in crude oil costs means drivers are paying more at the pump.

Well if you do a lot of traveling, you might want to start budgeting a little more tightly because gas prices aren't going down anytime soon.

Tuesday morning gas prices in Bismarck sat at $3.39 per gallon, that is 20 cents higher than at the beginning of the month.

And while we were at the pumps, it went up another dime.

"If your cost of living is going up so much and your increasing in your wages isn't going up, if you only get a one to two percent increase in your salary a year, well then it doesn't offset the 30 cents a gallon for the price of gas," says a Bismarck driver.

It's not just a problem in North Dakota. Gas prices are on the rise nationally.

"Gas prices have moved higher primarily to the fact that crude oil prices have been dragged to the highest prices for this time of year because of Europe. Brent crude oil has moved higher and we are following that price," says Eugene Graner, Heartland Investors.

Brent crude is a classification of oil that comes from the North Sea. Right now, that price is at over one-hundred dollars per barrel.

And drivers won't get relief anytime soon.

What we have coming up shortly will be the switch from the winter blend to the summer blend gasoline and that requires more refining. More refining is more cost. So just that alone will bump gas prices 25 to 30 cents when we get into the spring," says Graner.

But that jump is normal for the busy summer driving season. Drivers say high gas prices won't keep them off the road.

"Unfortunately I travel for my job, so I have to fill either way. There's not much you can do when you travel as much as I do," says Fargo driver Tanja Gollner.

Graner says gas prices will probably reach $3.70 in the next few months.

He also says it's become pretty typical for gas prices to reach $4 in the summertime.
