State Fines Companies For Violating Rule

Posted: Updated:

Four companies face fines for damaging gas lines and an electrical cables after violating the call before you dig rule.

The companies damaged infrastructure during excavation projects in Mandan and Minot. State law requires excavators to contact a state one-call center at least 48 hours before digging, so the center can notify them of any pipelines, telephone, electrical lines or other utility facilities buried in the area.

"The thing that I think these four highlighted is the fact that we're serious about enforcement. If you violate the law, you're going to be held accountable. And luckily no one was injured or killed in these incidents. That's what we're trying to avoid, protect the infrastructure and project the human life," says commissioner Brian Kalk, Public Service Commission.

The number to call is 811. The maximum fine has gone up from $5,000 to $25,000 thousand after the PSC lobbied for the change last year.
