We're in the heart of tax season. And, for many, preparing taxes can be stressful. But, some Accounting and Finance students at Minot State University are helping make the process a little easier.
They may only be juniors and seniors in college, buy they're already getting a jump start on their accounting and financing careers by helping prepare taxes this year.
"The students work really hard," says Carla Cabarle, Minot State University Assistant Accounting Professor. "They do extensive training [during the] certification process. They're required to have taken their first set of tax courses in the program before they participate."
Minot State University Junior Accounting and Finance Major Lindsee Kjos says, "It was four exams that I had to pass. It took about roughly 30 hours to go through the whole training process and take the test and it was challenging. And, at times, it was really stressful. But, now that I've gone through it, now it's a proud accomplishment that I was able to pass them."
For more than 20 years, Minot State University's Accounting Department has been offering VITA an IRS-sponsored program that provides income tax preparation services free of charge to the community.
"They basically just, you know, help [people] that don't know how to do their own tax returns or are intimidated by them or sometimes it really helps people who normally wouldn't file tax returns and they are typically the ones who get the biggest returns," says Cabarle.
To qualify for the free service, you must earn less than $52,000 for the year. While there are only 5 tax preparers, everyone works together in their different roles to make sure every single return is filed correctly.
Cabarle says, "This is their business and they run it the way they see fit and I supervise and kind of make sure that all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed, but they really run the show."
"To get this experience well, I think [will] only be beneficial in the future for me," says Kjos.
The MSU site is open on Monday's from 2:15 to 7:15 pm through March 31st. For more information the program or to schedule an appointment, call: 858-3122.
