Surrey Council Approves Water Projects

Posted: Updated:

The city of Surrey will soon have a new water main, an updated pump station and a water tower that will store eight days worth of water. On Monday, the city council approved three water projects that will cost about $3.15 million.

Prior to the approval, residents attended a public meeting at City Hall to get more information about the costs and benefits associated with the projects.

They learned that the state Water Commission agreed to pay for half of the project, up to $1.5 million, which will make their costs about $200 a year for 10 years.

"The availability of funding from the State Water Commission is an important part of the timing of these projects.  If we don't act now, that funding may not be allocated to us in the future and the burden of paying for these needed improvements would be much greater to the city and its residents," says Jason Vaagen, Surrey City Administrator.

Construction on the projects will begin this summer. Currently, the town's water tower only holds one days worth of water.
