City Commission Looks To Quiet Train Whistles

Posted: Updated:

Bismarck residents have often complained about loud train whistles. That's why a proposed quiet rail system was on the city commission agenda on Feb. 25. The Commission planned to talk about signing the $3.6 million contract with BNSF Railway, but it will have to wait two more weeks.

The contract was supposed to arrive yesterday, but it didn't. If passed the city will see improvements on rail crossings at 3rd, 5th and 12th Streets to replace the whistle.

"As part of that design phase the engineering agreement there was a 60,000 deposit. I would like to ask that the board grant authority to execute that contract with the deposit once staff had a chance to review those documents and attorney Whitman to approve them," says Mark Berg, Traffic Engineer.

The decision will be made at the next commission meeting on March 11. If it's approved, it should take 12 to 18 months to complete the project.
