Study Suggests Removing Ovaries to Prevent Cancer

Posted: Updated:

Women with breast cancer susceptibility gene mutations may want to consider removing their ovaries by the age of 35.

A new study done by the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations who had their ovaries removed significantly reduced their risk of ovarian and fallopian tube cancer.

Mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have been linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Many people who do have the gene choose to have children first, and then have their ovaries removed, just to be safe.

"It's up there percentage wise, that the people that have this mutation and keep their ovaries intact have a 65 percent chance of developing cancer," says Trinity Cancer Care Center patient navigator Jenene Kittleson.

There are ways you can protect yourself. If someone in your family does carry the gene mutation, you should begin your screenings and surveillance ten years prior to the age that your family member was diagnosed.
