EPA Meets With North Dakota Energy Leaders

Posted: Updated:

A new rule published by the EPA would cap emissions at existing coal-fired power plants and set limits for emissions on all future plants. Now, the head of the EPA will meet with North Dakota energy leaders and utilities to discuss the proposed changes.

Basin Electric is preparing for the visit tomorrow to the Great Plains Synfuels plant. The plant is the only one of it's kind in North America, as it converts lignite coal into several by-products and carbon dioxide, which is sent to Canada and used for oil recovery.

"The thing we want to convey to Administrator McCarthy is that the technology we use at the gasification plant to capture C02 is vastly different than what we use at our coal plants. A lot of the regulations that they are looking at for existing plants are looking at how to capture C02, and we have done a lot of work on that. We know that it's not commercial feasible at this time," says Dale Niezwaag of Basin Electric.

Several energy leaders and groups will be at the round table discussion, covering issues from cost of outfitting plants with new carbon capture technology to the possible increases on electricity bills.
