Hundreds Arrested for Protesting Keystone Pipeline

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of students and youth organizers were arrested today as they protested the Keystone XL Pipeline project outside the white house. They were urging President Obama to say no to the project.

The proposed pipeline would begin in northern Alberta, Canada and extend more than one thousand miles to the US Gulf Coast. Once completed, the pipeline would carry 830-thousand barrels of oil a day. The project needs federal approval because the pipeline would cross an international border.

Opponents say the pipeline will increase carbon pollution, but on the other hand, supporters say it wouldn't significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions. They also say it would create thousands of temporary jobs.
