Human Service Grant Helps Childcare Providers

Posted: Updated:

During the last legislative session lawmakers provided funding to the Department of Human Service to expand a program that helps childcare providers care for children with special needs.

Becky Berger has been an in home childcare provider for the last eight years.

"I started staying home with my kids and decided I could help out other people and its grown from there," says Berger.

Over the years several of the children she has had in her home have had a variety of special needs.

"I have sensory issues in the house," says Berger. "One was premature, 14 weeks premature. So, when he came here we were still developmentally behind."

But a grant offered by the Department of Human Services has helped her help children she cares for.

"Providers can apply for a grant for a number of purposes. Staffing, remodeling of space or equipment or supplies that would be needed that would enhance the care for kids," says Early Childhood Services administrator Jennifer Barry.

When Berger was awarded the grant she used it to buy a ball pit, a balance beam, an ipad and apps that she says have been helpful.
