Tech Talk: HUVr Board Hoax

Posted: Updated:

Earlier this week, an online video went viral, leading many to believe they were stepping into the future.

Twenty-five-years-ago, Back to the Future II introduced the world to the HUVr Board. In the movie, the futuristic skateboard existed in the year 2015.

"It's just very, very cool. So, I thought I'd like to buy one one day," says Bismarck resident Jonathan Rixen.

Earlier this week, a viral video gave fans a glimpse into the future.

"I was excited! I was wondering where I could buy one really," says Bismarck resident Claire Gunderson.

The website gave people a chance to pick their favorite design. And even had a video of celebrities demonstrating the product.

"Finally! I can't believe how well it works. I didn't think it would be that smooth you know. It always looked in the movies like it was just awkward and it was going sideways. And once I got on it, it felt natural, really," says Tony Hawk a professional skateboarder that appeared in the video.

But the video was one of many hoaxes sweeping the web. Funnyordie.com was behind it all.

"The HUVr Board video is really well done.," says Scott Wild of Wild Inspire. "With today's film equipment and CGI almost anything can be done. And because of the HUVr Board and Jimmy Kimmel, there's a lot of people out there now who are finding it a challenge to see if they can turn a hoax into a viral video."

Jimmy Kimmel was one of the first celebrities to join to the online hoax game.
One of his most famous hoaxes is of a wolf wandering through the hallway of a Sochi hotel. The video made news headlines on national networks. Wild says it's all in good fun.

"We're always looking for something that's fascinating, that's incredible," says Wild. "The HUVr Board is a perfect example. I mean, how many of us saw Back to the Future and wanted to see that HUVr Board come to life?"

He says these hoax videos are nothing to be afraid of. But if you ever feel suspicious about a link or message you see on Facebook, send a message to the person who posted it or visit the company's website.

Wild says if you look closely at the video, you can see signs of the safety harness they used to lift the actors off the ground. Tony Hawk has issued an apology for misleading the public. He says it was just an awesome opportunity to ride in a Delorean with Doc Brown.
