Special Olympics Tournament Draws Many

Posted: Updated:

In the world of sports, March means basketball tournament time for College and High School teams throughout the country. But Friday at the Minot State University Dome, one of the most meaningful tourneys was underway.

Over 450 athletes from across North Dakota came together for the 32nd annual Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament.

Forty-six teams from 14 communities are participating in the two day event. Special Olympics North Dakota is part of a worldwide effort to unleash the human spirit through the joy of sports.

"One of the things Special Olympics does, or why it's important, is that it's a vehicle that changes lives, and we use the vehicle of sports," says Special Olympic CEO Kathleen Meagher. "Often times when you talk about somebody with a disability right away you think of barriers. In Special Olympics a person has an intellectual disability, that does not mean they have a physical ability. We have athletes in our program that probably should have played high school basketball."

There are more than 1,400 Special Olympic athletes in North Dakota that take part in the five sports offered in North Dakota. The 2014 Special Olympics State Tournament continues tomorrow at 9 p.m.
