Students Take Part In Science Olympiad

Posted: Updated:

Science, math and engineering skills are proving to be more and more valuable in a child's education.

Junior high and high school students from schools over the area took over the Minot State University's (MSU) campus today to showcase their science knowledge in this year's science olympiad.

The students participated in dozens of activities, competitions and skills tests.

The exercises are a way for students to take the skills they learn in school and employ them outside of the classroom in a real-world setting.

"These aren't really classroom activities that the teachers are doing," says JoAnn Schapp a Bishop Ryan Middle School teacher and a Co-Director of the Northwest Regional Science Olympiad. "These are activities, the kids are coming in after school, and they're sitting down with the coach and they're coming up with ideas and the kids, it's the kids that are creating these inventions, these devices."

"It's a great way for them to get involved in science instead of the usual what you do in the classroom is all you do in science," says MSU Chemistry and Biology major Jakob Zerr. "You get to use what you know and think of, use different ideas in order to show what you know."

Depending on how they performed at the olympiad today, some school's teams qualified for the state competition in Bismarck later this year.
