Riverside Students Adjust To New School

Last year's Riverside elementary students appeared to be adjusting to their new home at Dorothy Moses Elementary. The Bismarck School district closed down Riverside and moved South Central High School there.

Parents and faculty say they've made it through the change by working together. The newest Moses students are among the many students having fun outside, eating lunch and learning.

And they agreed the transition was hard.

"Yeah, I miss my friend and stuff. They had to go to a different school," says fourth-grader Asya Jama.

Transportation is still an issue.

"A lot less of that ability to be mobile on your own as a kid, when you're a third grader, fourth grader, fifth grader," says Dorothy Moses Principal Jason Hornbacker.

Riverside students use to be able to walk to school. Now, parents and school bus drivers are needed. But incase students miss the bus for whatever reason,  Dorothy Moses has a back up, a van.

But the positives can out weigh the negatives.

"I would say it's going really well. From a social, emotional, behavioral, academic stand point," says Hornbacker. "The kids are doing well. They're well adjusted into being a Dorothy Moses student."

Parents say they were more uncomfortable with the change than the students were.

"It's all up to the way you react because the way that you react is the way that you're children are gonna react," says PTO vice president Becky Todd.

She says parents' minds were more comfortable because Riverside Principal Jason Hornbacher and some other staff members transitioned with the students to Dorothy Moses.
 "Some people at Dorothy Moses say that they wish Riverside was open so we could go there to see what Riverside was like," says Jama.

Overall parents and faculty say it's not perfect, but they're just happy the students are happy.
