Training Program Helps Doctors Prevent Suicide

Posted: Updated:

The health department says there were 107 suicides in North Dakota last year.

Employees of the department say they have recently reached out to middle schools and high schools to spread awareness, and now a new campaign is being rolled out that's targeting primary care doctors.

The Center for Disease Control says it's a common trend for people to visit their primary doctor before committing suicide because psychological problems can quickly turn into something physical.

"They trust their primary care doctor. Again, I think those things really do manifest themselves in the headache that doesn't go away, or the stomach ache that doesn't go away. There's no answer. And it's depression that is causing those symptoms," says Micki Savelkoul of the North Dakota Department of Health.

Coming up at ten we'll talk a little bit more about the training program that doctors will be going through.
