Posted: Updated:

North Dakota schools don't have enough teachers to go around. That's why the North Dakota Universities System and Department of Public Instruction (DPI) are teaming up to offer elementary and secondary education teachers loan forgiveness.

DPI has noted teachers are needed throughout the state in all areas of education. So, to keep teachers in state the Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness Program was started.

For the past six years, more than 300 teachers have earned a $1,000 per year. Those eligible for the program are can earn a maximum of $3,000.

"Given the status of our state right now and the growth and wanting to retain our talent with in the state. This is a wonderful opportunity," says the director of the North Dakota Universities System of Financial Aid Brenda Zastoupli.

Money for the program is allotted through the North Dakota Legislature.
