Community Plots Give Gardeners Opportunity

Posted: Updated:

With spring comes planting season...but not everyone in North Dakota has land to grow their own food.

It may be bare now...but soon these plots will be blooming with home-grown produce.

"This is an opportunity for people to learn how gardens are grown and vegetables are grown," says Kent Morrow volunteer for Bismarck Community Gardens.

In Bismarck, the community gardens are where people can buy a 10-by-10 foot plot and grow their own food throughout the summer.

"I think we're seeing a bit of an urbanization of Bismarck. People don't have a direct relation to the farm that they did maybe a generation ago, or maybe not even that long ago. And the fact that there's a social aspect to community gardening is also very important," says Greg Smith of Bismarck Parks and Rec.

But these gardens aren't the only community farming opportunity. South of Mandan, Riverbound Farm is selling plots for its community-supported agriculture project.

"One of the parts of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) stands for, is the community part and with that, part of what that means is that we're all in it together. There's this kind of shared risk but also shared benefit," says Brian McGinness of Riverbound Farm.

Riverbound Farm has moved to a new location, but they're still planning to grow more than 30 different kinds of crops for members.
"It's fresh and it's local," says McGinness.

The difference between the two options is that community garden members plant and farm their own plot, while CSA members can help out at the farm, but don't actually grow everything. That's up to McGinness and his family.

"We actually have quite a few CSA members who have community garden plots, and they also joined the CSA, because we do all the growing of food," says McGinness.

Both places still have plenty of spots open. The community gardens have about 350 spots to fill, while Riverbound has 50.

There is a price difference between the two too. For more information visit http://bisparks.org/facilities/community-gardens/.
