Kenmare Residents React to Boy's Death

Posted: Updated:

A small community is reacting to the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy who authorities say starved to death.

His mother, 35-year-old Jessica Jensen, appeared in court Monday and was charged with Class AA Murder and child abuse neglect.

Since then, residents in Kenmare are left to wonder how this could have gone unnoticed.

"Why did nobody know about this? Why wasn't something done? Why didn't something take care of this? If you knew about this, why didn't you do something?" says Grindeland.

The Cenex is one of the more frequent stops that people make in town and Vicki Grindeland says she rarely saw Jensen out.

"I could tell you, I did have two years off, but I worked here for ten going on 11, and I probably saw her three times," says Grindeland.

Residents say the house always seemed abandoned and that Jensen kept to herself.

If you take a look at their home, it looks like it was not lived in. However, three children were inside.

But the question on the minds of many is how such a thing could have gone unnoticed.

"We are close knit. We feel like we know our neighbor. But, look, we don't know our neighbor. And, if we did, something would have been done," says Grindeland.

The people in Kenmare say they're deeply disturbed by what happened behind closed doors. And, others throughout the state are taking to the web to voice their opinions.

"It's really sad because he just seemed like a precious little boy. And, that's what people had in their hearts that did know him," says Grindeland.

Residents in Kenmare are just trying to cope with this unfortunate situation.

Jensen's two other children are currently staying with other family members. Jensen's next court appearance is scheduled for May 1st.
