Baesler Comments On Kenmare Tragedy

The Kenmare superintendent says Jessica Jensen applied to home school two of her children.

The Kenmare school district did follow-up on the students' education, but didn't make any home visits, which may not have been required.

The Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler says in addition to teachers, counselors and school administrators, many other agencies and community organizations are tasked with looking out for child welfare.

"There are 10 groups of professionals that are required to what we say is a mandatory duty to report if that professional suspects child abuse or neglect," says Baesler.

Some of the other agencies that are tasked with monitoring a child's well being are law enforcement, medical professionals and the clergy.

Baesler says the vast majority of people who choose to home school are committed to their children's health and education and the tragic situation in Kenmare should not reflect negatively on parents who choose to teach their children.

"They are very committed to their students in producing fantastic results. Lets make sure that we really analyze each case on a case by case basis doing all that we can to ensure each and every child in North Dakota is receiving the care and education that they deserve," says Baesler.

If the parents of home schooled children have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. state law does not require any supervision by a school district.
