Democrats Endorsing Candidates at Convention

Posted: Updated:

The Republican party has the upper hand in state government, but Democrats are endorsing candidates this weekend that they say can turn the tide.

Young but experienced...that was the common thread among Democratic candidates endorsed at today's state convention.

"The atmosphere is up and everybody seems in a really good mood, and we're seeing a lot of new faces and young faces, and that's really exciting," says Renelle Bertsch from Wahpeton.

The Democratic-NPL party endorsed four major candidates for Attorney General, Tax Commissioner, Public Service Commissioner, and Agriculture Commissioner.

"The slogan for today, Building a Future, they're really good with young people and adapting to change and I think that's something that our state needs," says NDSU Student Megan Matejcek.

The big story here: Ryan Taylor. The former state senator got the Ag Commissioner endorsement saying agriculture needs a stronger voice on the state's Industrial Commission.

"The vote this fall should be a vote that demands better management, greater care and thoughtfulness, and longer vision and a brighter future for our land and its people," says Taylor.

Republicans have controlled the state house and senate for two decades, but Democrats say they're going straight to the people to get votes.

Democratic-NPL Chairman Bob Valeu says, "Our strategy is to present to the people of North Dakota a balance, a message, and we're going to have a ground game to get that message out to all North Dakotans."

The convention continues tomorrow with the endorsement of the candidate for U.S. House Representative. The party is expected to endorse George Sinner, son of the former Governor, for that U.S. House spot.
