Cyclists Prepare for Charity Event

Posted: Updated:

The GABR event is made up of teams of 12 cyclists who compete against each other to raise some money for kids challenged by cerebral palsy. And even though the bikes used in the event are stationary, there's still plenty of maintenance that needs to be done in order to get them ready for race day.

"We have about 110 bikes, and we go through and do the chains and check the alignment for the wheels to make sure they're in good shape for everybody riding that day," says volunteer Jeffrey Mattern.

The name of the game is team work, because without the help of volunteers,  the GABR event would be no where near the caliber it is today.

"They lube up the chains, they put on the computers that track how many miles people spin, they tape up the wires to make sure and just calibrate the computers so everybody has an even day on the race day," says Mattern.

"I think once people are involved with GABR, it isn't hard to talk them in to coming back and volunteer," says GABR co-chair, Melanie Carvell. "We just have such a great group of mechanics that help keep the bikes running, like we did today and the day of."

And speaking of volunteering, coordinators say one of the best parts about participating is the aspect of paying it forward.

"When you walk around the day of the race, and you see how many of the teams are built around kids that are challenged by cerebral palsy. Threre are families that have benefited from GABR and then come back, bring a team and it just keeps growing and the momentum keeps growing," says Carvell.

Getting the bikes ready for race day takes plenty of work, but it's work that makes the Great American Bike Race a possibility.
