Residents Battle Spring Storm

Posted: Updated:

The warm weekend had many people ditching their coats and heading outdoors, but with wind chills dipping below zero, people are bundling back up.

It's not spring in North Dakota until the last blizzard hits.

"You know, I was born and raised in North Dakota. It happens every year," says Collin Dobrobolny.

"It's awesome. One day it's 60 degrees, the next day it's blizzarding," says Chris Knodel.

Parts of the state could see close to 12 inches of snow. Before the storm, Bismarck was 18 inches shy of normal snowfall accumulation for the months of October through March. But, Meteorologist Henry Blakes says it's possible to have too much of a good thing.

"Moisture is good, but we don't want too much at one time, especially for the farmers. Because, if they get too much snow at once, they run the risk of losing cattle," says Blakes.

The National Weather Service measured more than six inches of snow at the Bismarck airport on the morning of March 31. Schools were closed and no travel was advised.

"All we can do is hope that this will be the last winter storm. But, one of our viewers on Facebook said that her grandmother said that any month that has 'R' in it is practically a winter month in North Dakota. So, if that's the case, we have a few more months to go," says Blakes.

But that doesn't stop spring fever from setting in.

"It's going to be gone soon. But more and more, I want to live in California," Rhonda Flegel.

Henry says as long as the storm maintains its current track and speed, we can count on better weather by Tuesday.

Meteorologist Kevin Lawrence says the top soil has been drying out and the snowfall could be beneficial to spring planting.
