Hospitals Staff For Bad Weather

Posted: Updated:
Sanford employees say they have been preparing for this blizzard since Friday, and because there jobs are essential to patient care, accommodations had to be made to make sure there were enough hands on deck.

"We arranged housing with local hotels that are in town. In fact, right across the street," says the president of Sanford Health Dr. Craig Lambrecht. "We arranged special transportation, four-wheel drive vehicles and we have fabulous communication."

And when weather prevents the hospital's AirMed service from being used, staying in touch with the folks on the ground is crucial.

"We'll coordinate with ground ambulance there too," says Lambrecht. "The pre-hospital providers and ambulance both do a fabulous job in knowing which routes are open and paying attention to road closures, highway patrol, it's the entire EMS system that just runs on adrenaline."

Weather is unpredictable, especially this time of year. So, the name of the game in making quality patient care a priority is communication.
