Students Learn Computer Literacy

Posted: Updated:

Sixth-graders at Bismarck Public Schools are getting the skills they need to succeed in a digital world.

A new class is teaching sixth graders how to be computer literate and stay safe online.

"I think it's fun, because I like working with computers, and I like all the fun activities we do with the computers," says student Skylar Riedinger.

The class teaches kids 21st century skills.

"The students learn how to use technology appropriately. We have a lot of digital citizenship interwoven into everyday lessons and activities, as well," says teacher Sarah Francetich.

Students use what they learn in other classes to create digital projects. This week, the focus is on world religions. The class is researching five major religions and creating a website.

"I think it's cool, because when we're done, people can use us as a resource. And it's kind of cool to know that people are using us and that we helped other people with their research," says student Ashti Ali.

Students also learn how to use many online applications. But Francetich says the biggest challenge for students is making good decisions when using technology.

"Digital citizenship is just a huge part of our lives. These students are in front of technology 24-hours a day if they could be! So, they need to learn how to use technology appropriately and safely," says Francetich.

The goal of the class is to teach students to be responsible online citizens, and to increase their communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity skills.

This is the first year Bismarck Public Schools has offered the class.
