Pioneer Students Propose Green Space

Posted: Updated:

Fifth-graders at Pioneer Elementary are working towards a greener campus. They say the black top and mulch playground are fun, but they want softer turf to play on.

The students are working on a Project-Based Learning activity, combining their work in math, English and science to find out what it would take to get a "green space" grassy area on the playground. Through the project they're learning about branding, grants, how to write professional letters and more.

"We just wanna get this grass so we can use it for sports, like football, soccer, kickball. It'd just be more safe, kid-friendly environment, and then not only for us, but the community too," says fifth-grader Jakob Aadres.

The fifth graders says they understand they won't be the ones to benefit from the new play ground, because construction won't start for a while; but say its important for the school.
