College Offers Hands-On Refinery Training

Posted: Updated:

The Dakota Prairie Refinery (DPR) in Dickinson is supposed to open at the end of the year. But before that can happen, it needs qualified employees.

Bismarck State College is providing hands-on training for DPR employees before they start so, they can hit the ground running when the refinery opens.

Most employees are trained on the job, but future Dakota Prairie Refinery workers are getting a head start.

"The biggest thing is just to build their level of competency to where when they get out there in the plant, they feel like they're prepared for their job," says instructor Paul Zimmerman.

Bismarck State College has been running a three month training program since January that teaches DPR employees what they need to know to run a refinery.

"It's a little different than a lot of the stuff we've done in the past here at BSC, this is a lot longer length training," says Zimmerman.

"It's very relevant and it will boost our confidence when we're going to the industry. That we actually help in the process, and also improve production quality of the diesel that we are going to produce at DPR," says DPR employee Ackim Maduvu.

BSC has a smaller-scale distillation machine and steam generator that allows workers to train hands-on.

"They're learning about pumps, they're learning about compressors, they're learning about valves, all the stuff that make up a refinery," says Zimmerman.

And at BSC, they can see inside the machinery.

"It's hands on, but a lot of the stuff here you can see the internal workings of," says DPR employee Austin Macks.

And employees say it's a way to gain experience before they even start.

"It'll help a lot of the guys that's never had any plant formal training. They'll help them have a better idea of what they'll be jumping into instead of going in blind," says Macks.

The training ends April 11.

Once the training ends, the workers will head to the refinery to start learning on-site.
