MSU Holds Bone Marrow Drive To Save Lives

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of thousands of people arediagnosed with blood cancer and other life-threatening blood-related diseaseseach year. In effort to save more lives, Minot State University held a bone marrow drive on  Wednesdayto help fill a great need in the community.

Less than half of people who need abone marrow or stem cell transplant actually find their perfect match. So,the biology department at Minot State University(MSU) is trying to increase those odds.

"Well, basically, if you have acancer, like leukemia or lymphoma or another blood disorder, and you get to thepoint where you need a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant, that'spretty much your last chance at survival," says MSU professor Heidi Super.

As part of Power of 100, MSU held the drivein the Beaver Dam afternoon to help register more people for thedonor list.

"It'sbasically giving your contact information, a little bit of personalinformation, checking your health, and making sure you're healthy enough to dothis," says Super.

Once qualified, applicants arerequired to provide a cheek swab. But, just because you're registered, doesn't mean you will be called as a donor.

"If you happen on the rare occasion, you might be able to match to somebody who really needs blood stem cells orbone marrow," says Super. Then, you would be contacted by theorganization."

Super says blood cancers often affect children.

If youwould like to become a donor, but were unable to attend Wednesday's driveyou can visit www.deletebloodcancer.org to order your do-it-yourself swabkit.
