Posted: Updated:

Exercisingfor just one hour a day can add about twos hours to your life. And, what betterway to start lacing up on National Walking Day?

Morepeople than ever are hiding behind technology and not staying active.

"Weprobably don't spend as much time exercising as we really think we do,"says Lacey Stevick.

Stevick, mother of three tries to get to the gym as much as she can, but she does admitit could be tempting to pick up that phone.

"Everybodyhas an iPhone or something like that, and it's always available. Wealways have that instant technology. And, I know for me, I tend to get a littlebit more wrapped up than I should on my phone or checking emails or Facebook,"says Stevick.

Butonce you put down that phone, you may be surprised how much exercise canbenefit your overall health.

"Physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. Just getting started on a program that isbasic and simple, and you can progress as you go," says Russell Gust a exercise physiologist at TrinityHealth.

Justlacing up for 30 minutes a day, each day of the week, will give you therecommended amount of exercise that you need.

"Don'tfeel like someone who wants to start an exercise program that you need to gofor 30 minutes because then you're going to feel like a failure if youhaven't it done it for a long time," says Gust.

So, grabyour sneakers and start working for 10 or 15 minutes, and slowly progress to therecommended amount.

The recommended amount of exercise for an average adult is 150minutes weekly. For kids, it's suggested that they have 60 minutes aday.
