Jiu Jitsu Club Brings Culture And Exercise To Minot

Posted: Updated:

The Minot community is growing. But whether you've lived here for years or are new to town, you may not know about the Calavera Martial Arts Studio, home of the Minot Jiu Jitsu Club.

"What makes most of these guys scary, they come in and they train three, four or even five days a week. They're in here consistently, and they're not ready to just better their game, they're ready to better everybody else's game," says Andrew Magathan a Jiu Jitsu student.

"If I'm not stuck in the books I'm definitely over here," says student Gerald Rivera. "If I'm not at work I'm definitely over here just putting in a lot of mat time. This is my passion, this is what I love to do."

"Your primary focus is on the ground where you can neutralize somebody's size and strength. You can get into certain positions where you use leverage, and it doesn't matter that they're stronger or bigger than you. You're able to control them and get the submission," says Ryan Stiles the founder of the club.

"I walk around at 185 pounds and there are guys here at 135, 145 pounds and they toss me like I'm a small child," says Magathan.

"Jiu Jitsu is for everybody. It empowers the little guys and humbles the bigger guys," says Charlie Alafita the head instructor.

"A lot of people step on the mats angry. A lot of people step off the mats a lot less angry," says Rivera.

"It's incredible. I've seen these guys come from starting where they don't know anything, and I'm the 150 pound coach, and they're the 215 pound guy and they can't do anything against me, and they're just amazed. And now these guys are up and coming and just talented individuals. I think we have a good chance of bringing back some medals at this tournament," says Stiles.

The Minot Jiu Jitsu Club will leave for Minneapolis on May 15 to go to the Naga Jiu Jitsu Tournament.  For more information on the Calavera Martial Arts and Boxing Club go to www.AskFitness.com and click the fitness center tab.
