MSU Students Learn Techniques For Helping Speech Disorders

Posted: Updated:

Speech and language disorders affect a person's ability to talk, understand, read and write.

Approximately seven and a half million people in the United States have a voice disorder, and another six to eight million have some form of language impairment.

The North Dakota Speech Language Hearing Association met at Minot State University to discuss the latest teaching techniques for helping those with speech disorders.

"We still have to help them decode the words on the page before they an possibly comprehend it. We spend a lot of time teaching strategies that aren't necessary because the kids haven't mastered the decoding part. We have to step back and make sure that foundation is in place," says clinical professor Dr. Anne Whitney.

Only 40 percent of Americans are fluent in reading and writing.
