GABR Founder Talks About Event

Posted: Updated:
It's no secret medical equipment and the services that come along with it are expensive.

"There's no way these kids can get the service and intervention they need without some supplementary funding," says GABR founder, Dr. Kevin Murphy.

So, Dr. Murphy and his team were determined to find a solution.

"We discovered that Winnipeg had a beautiful bike race called the Great Canadian Stationary Bike Race for Cerebral Palsy," says Murphy. "We flew up there and looked at that for a couple years and decided to bring that to the southern side of the border."

But before taking over the capitol city, the GABR event started in Duluth, Minnesota.

"We ran it there for about four years," says Murphy. "It didn't quite take off as well in that city - we brought it to Bismarck and it's blossomed in a beautiful way."

Last year, cycling teams raised more than $410,000 for children with CP, and Dr. Murphy says it not only feels good to help raise those massive amounts of money, but it's also the relationships he forms that mean so much.

"It's a wonderful thing to have a long-term, lifetime relationship with the families and children over time," says Murphy. "We are already in our second or third generation of kids."

Raising children with CP is no easy task, so it's events like these that help make life a little easier for those kids and their families.
