Elementary Students Participate In Destination Gallery Projects

Posted: Updated:

One look around any parking lot in Minot and you can’t help but notice all of the different license plates. From Utah, South Dakota, Oregon and Maryland, Minot has become a hub for people all over the country.

And, Thursday students at Edison Elementary School wanted to bring to life what those plates represent.

"Most call it the state of 10,000 lakes because they have 5,000 fresh water and 5,000 regular lakes," says fourth grader Jaksyn Graham.

"I wanted to pick Rhode Island because it really got to my interest because it was really small,” says fourth-grader Addison Sordnson.

Students and family filled Mrs. Stanley's fourth-grade classroom to check out all of the Destination Gallery Research Projects.

"They made the project about them, and their personal interests of what they might do in life, where they might live or something they just want to know more about. The interest is heightened, so the excitement energy towards working on the project is heightened as well," says Stanley.

"I learned they have a lot of snowmobiles, that they have carving opportunities, a lot of agriculture, and 10,000 lakes," says Graham.

In October, the fourth graders were asked where they wanted to live based on occupation. From Louisiana to Pennsylvania, they picked a state and then, the research began.

"I picked Minnesota because my aunt lived there, and I got a Minnesota book from her that tells me almost everything I know," says Graham.

From writing to creating historical timelines, the students have kept busy preparing for their presentations.

"A project like this gives kids a focus for all content coming together and when you can integrate or marry content, the meaning becomes deeper for most students," says Stanley.

As the presentations wrap up, Stanley hopes the kids are thinking more about research and viewing U.S. geography in a different way.

"It makes me feel pretty good because everybody gets to know what I've learned all year," says Graham.
