Mandan High was on Lockdown, 2 Students Arrested

Posted: Updated:
Mandan High School went into lockdown this afternoon. Police say no charges have been filed at this point, but two Mandan students were taken into custody for possession of a concealed weapon.

Someone called police to report that a Mandan High student had a gun on campus. Police say they immediately responded to the call.

"It's pretty scary knowing that you think this is a safe city to live in and something like this does happen," says parent Sonya Kopp.

E-mails and text messages were sent to parents. School officials also notified students that they were going into lockdown.

"On the intercom the announcer sounded kind of shaky. I knew something had to have happened," says sophomore Kim Sterna

"Some kids kind of were getting nervous. I wasn't getting nervous, but we were looking out the window and cops were going around and stuff," says junior Shelby Nagel.

Police say five suspects were involved in the incident. When officers arrived on campus, they went to the Brave Center, and detained one student said to have possession of the gun.

"I hear rumors all the time that there are drugs. That is not what bothers me. One thing that does bother me is someone actually brought a gun to school, and you don't know what their intentions were," says freshman Travis Palmer.

However, the gun wasn't with him. It was with students walking down the 600 block of 6th Ave. Those four were detained, and the weapon was found in their possession.

Parents say they're happy no one was hurt, and appreciated police working hand in hand with the school. But there's still room for improvement.

"I suggest that the Brave Center be better secure," says parent Elysian Frederick. "From what I hear, that Brave Center's not very secure."

After word that the situation had been taken care of, administrators decided to resume the school day.

At this point, it does not appear that any direct threats were ever made against students or staff at Mandan High School, but the case is still being investigated.
