Napoleon Residents Hoping for Flooding Fix

Posted: Updated:

It's in their homes, on their roads, and overrunning their lives.

Napoleon resident Christine Gross, says groundwater has been seeping into her basement for weeks forcing her to rip out the carpet and throw away belongings.

She says the water is a result of high levels at nearby West Lake, even if the Logan County Water Board says there's no proof.

"The joke around here is we're not engineers, but I do know when the lake is up we have water," said Gross.

Gross is just one of 85 homeowners in the small city using sump pumps to keep her home from going under.

And on top of hundreds of dollars for water removal and disinfecting treatments, Mayor Kyle Haas says the flooding is taking a much greater toll.

"One of the biggest problems that they're having is that you can't go any place, I mean you have to be there, if your electricity goes out," said Haas.

Haas says two years ago he approached the Logan County Water Board with the same problem, but the lake was never lowered.

But now with more residents flooded, Gross says it's time to take action.

"I don't know how but it can be done, it has to be done I mean what do we do with our houses this way."

And homeowners aren't the only ones footing the bill for the flooding damage.

"So many streets are getting damaged and I mean no town can afford them but I guess smaller towns like this it seems like it's harder to find a buck than a lot of places,"said Haas.

A life-long Napoleon resident, Gross says moving isn't an option, especially since the problem can be fixed.

Gross says that about 40 residents came to the meeting with the Logan County Water Board Monday night, and they said they would start looking into options for lowering the lake.
