Tornado Survivor Shares Her Story

Posted: Updated:

Five days after an EF2 tornado ripped through a trailer park in Watford City, Sarahbeth Ackerman sat down with one teenager who is lucky to be alive.

"She reached out to grab my hand, and told me that everything was going to be okay and that she loved me. And the floor just kind of spilt between us," says Ainslea's father Ben Oliphant.

And that's the last thing Ainslea Oliphant remembers.

After that, she woke up in Trinity Hospital's Intensive Care Unit in Minot with no memory of the tornado.

"I didn't know why I was there or what was going on. Everybody had to retell me. And, I was just in amazement. I didn't know that it actually happened," says Ainslea.

Ainslea suffered major injuries like a broken collar bone and bleeding to the brain. But all of those injuries are still not getting her spirits down.

"Honestly, I want nothing more to put a full face of makeup on while talking to you guys. But, I know that I can't because it would just cover up everything that's happened."

Oliphant is already walking and will begin physical therapy this week.

"She's a strong young woman. She's strong," says Ben.

Just 15 years old, this young lady has some words of wisdom for everybody.

"You just got to live it like its your last. Because literally, in a matter of seconds, it could be gone."

Also gone was Ainslea's phone. Something that she looks at now as materialistic. Her phone survived, and was found under a propane tank only with a few scratches that can all be repaired.

As for her parents, they're just happy she's alive.

"She's a beauty queen. That's my baby."

Ainslea says she just looking forward to taking some hashtag selfies and celebrating her 16th birthday next month.
