Operation Heroes Day Held at Minot Air Force Base

Posted: Updated:
Hundreds of children and families turned out for the annual Operation HEROES event at the Minot Air Force Base today.

The event is a way for children of military families to experience what their parents or siblings have to go through when preparing for a deployment.  The young "warriors" were split up into different groups, given mission briefings and were able to get some hands-on experience with different equipment that's used on a deployment.
"It's to build resiliency," says MSgt. Mathew Bowley. "When they're going on a deployment, when they're going on a recall, they know what the recall is, they know what it is to go through a deployment line. They know what kind of living conditions. I've been in that tent right there, so when the parents call back home, and they're in a deployed location, the kids can say 'I've seen that, I've done that.' It's a good opportunity for the kids."

"It just helps with communication," says MSgt. Anton Olson. "It makes that communication easier when mom and dad sit down with their kids and talks about deployment. They can say hey I went through deployment lines. They can say I know what that was. Things are more geared towards kids, and made kid friendly, but it's a good time for the kids."
About 200 kids and 150 parents took part in Operation HEROES, which was started in 2009. More than 100 Minot Air Force Base volunteers helped put on this event.
